The owners of a South African bar, where 21 teenagers died during a party in 2022, have been sentenced to either pay a fine or serve 100 days in prison. They were found guilty of selling alcohol to individuals under 18 years old. The incident, which occurred in the Eastern Cape province, sparked outrage and reignited discussions about raising the legal drinking age.

A toxicology report indicated that the teenagers died from suffocation caused by overcrowding. Additionally, traces of the toxic chemical methanol were found in their bodies. A formal inquest into the tragedy is still pending.
