A Congolese man, once hailed as a success story of migrant integration, has been sentenced to nine years in prison in Germany for raping and brutally assaulting his mother. Moise Lohombo, 30, was sentenced by the Wiesbaden District Court, where the judge expressed disbelief at the case’s details.
According to the German outlet Nuis, Lohombo had just been released from prison for drug offenses last August when he returned to the apartment he shared with his mother, who is only 12 years older than him. Brandishing a knife, he threatened her into having sex with him. In a desperate bid to avoid the assault, his mother offered him money for a prostitute.
Lohombo ignored her plea and proceeded to rape her while repeatedly punching her in the face. After the attack, he called an ambulance and fled. Investigators found the apartment covered in blood spatter, which Lohombo had attempted to clean. Miraculously, the mother survived despite severe brain bleeding, but she suffered significant psychological trauma and expressed fears that her son might have impregnated her.
The court found Lohombo guilty, rejecting a plea to incarcerate him in a psychiatric institution. During the trial, Lohombo’s only statement was, “I don’t know how this happened.”
Lohombo had previously been featured in a 2017 article in Deutsche Handwerkszeitung newspaper as a model of successful integration. Arriving from Congo at age eight, he was portrayed as having overcome a troubled past of violence and crime. The article celebrated his apprenticeship as a baker and training to become a professional boxer, describing him as a “charming, friendly young man.”
This case adds to the growing concerns about crime rates among migrants in Germany. Recent government statistics indicate that 41 percent of all crime suspects are foreigners, a significant overrepresentation given their proportion of the population. Violent crimes, particularly knife attacks and rapes, have seen a sharp increase.
Last week, a German politician was fined $6000 for ‘incitement’ after posting a link to government statistics on migrant crime rates, specifically questioning the high incidence of rape.
A recent survey found that 70 percent of citizens in European countries believe there is too much unchecked immigration, with the number rising to 77 percent among Germans. This sentiment aligns with another recent poll showing widespread opposition to mass migration in Germany.
