Kenyan Authorities Detain Foreigner in Connection with Murder of Student

Kenyan authorities have detained a foreign national in relation to the murder of a 20-year-old Kenyan student, Rita Waeni. The suspect was apprehended on Tuesday as he tried to leave Kenya using a Mozambican passport.

Rita Waeni’s dismembered body was discovered in a short-term rental apartment in Nairobi last Sunday. According to her family, the perpetrator attempted to extort money from them after killing Rita. The family received three messages from Rita’s phone on Sunday morning, demanding a ransom of 500,000 Kenyan shillings ($3,100; £2,400) within 24 hours for her release. Unfortunately, the family was unable to negotiate further or meet the demands before Rita’s body was found.

The police are still searching for Rita’s head, which was taken by the killer along with her phone and other personal belongings. They are also attempting to link the suspect to an individual captured on security cameras retrieving the keys to the rental apartment. Additionally, two other persons of interest have been arrested in connection with the case.

Investigations have revealed that the killer lured Rita through her Instagram account. Rita was in her final year of studies at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

This tragic incident has sparked outrage and renewed calls for the protection of women and girls in Kenya, following a recent spate of similar killings.
