Africa’s First Black Female Olympic Gold Medalist, Derartu Tulu, Honored with Postage Stamps in Ethiopia

Ethiopia has unveiled postage stamps featuring Derartu Tulu, the first black African woman to win an Olympic gold medal. The stamps were revealed in Addis Ababa today to commemorate International Women’s Day.

Each stamp in the series depicts key moments in Tulu’s career, starting with her first Olympic victory in 1992 in Barcelona at the age of 20.

Derartu is a revered figure in Ethiopia and has served as the president of the Ethiopian Athletics Federation (EAF) since November 2018.

In addition to her 1992 Barcelona Olympic gold in the 10,000m event, Tulu also won gold at the Sydney 2000 Olympics and a bronze at the Athens 2004 Olympics.

She joins a prestigious group of Ethiopian athletes who have been honored with stamps in the country, including Abebe Bikila and Haile Gebrselassie.
