Witnesses and hospital sources report that an Ethiopian army drone strike has resulted in the deaths of dozens in the Amhara region.

The attack, which allegedly took place on Monday near the small town of Sasit in central Ethiopia, occurred while a truck was dropping off passengers. The Ethiopian army has been in conflict with a local militant group known as Fano since April of the previous year.

Residents informed said that as many as 30 civilians, including 16 members of a single family who were returning from a baby’s baptism, were killed in the attack. A medical professional confirmed that 18 individuals sustained severe injuries, with three of them succumbing to their injuries upon arrival at a medical facility.

The conflict in the region began when authorities opted to dissolve an ethnic-based paramilitary organization and integrate its members into other regional and national security forces. The government has not yet responded to reports of Monday’s attack.

Since August of the previous year, the Amhara region has been under a state of emergency.
