In a significant breakthrough in the ongoing battle against cybercrime, Zambian authorities have uncovered a sophisticated internet fraud syndicate, resulting in the arrest of 77 individuals, including 22 Chinese nationals. The operation, described as a multi-agency raid, targeted a Chinese-run company suspected of orchestrating elaborate fraudulent schemes.

The focal point of the raid was Golden Top Support Services, a company located in Roma, an upscale suburb of Lusaka, the Zambian capital. Employing Zambian nationals under the guise of call-center agents, the firm allegedly engaged in deceptive conversations across various platforms, including WhatsApp, Telegram, and chatrooms. These conversations were scripted to deceive unsuspecting mobile users.

During the raid, law enforcement agencies seized a substantial amount of equipment, including devices enabling callers to mask their location, as well as thousands of SIM cards. Particularly alarming were the discovery of 11 SIM boxes, devices capable of rerouting calls to bypass legitimate phone networks, facilitating fraudulent activities such as internet fraud and online scams.

The magnitude of the operation became apparent with the confiscation of over 13,000 SIM cards, both domestic and international, indicating the syndicate’s widespread reach. According to Nason Banda, Director General of the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), evidence suggests that the illicit operations extended beyond Zambia’s borders, with individuals in countries like Singapore, Peru, the United Arab Emirates, and various African nations being targeted.

In addition to the seizure of equipment, the authorities confiscated firearms and ammunition, underscoring the seriousness of the situation. While Zambian nationals involved in the operation have been charged and released on bail to aid investigations, the foreign nationals, including the 22 Chinese men and a Cameroonian, remain in custody pending further legal proceedings.

The swift and coordinated action by Zambian law enforcement agencies highlights their commitment to combatting cybercrime and protecting citizens from fraudulent schemes. However, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the ever-evolving nature of online scams and the need for continuous vigilance and cooperation between authorities and the public to safeguard against such threats.
