Tragedy struck outside Cairo on Tuesday as a small bus, ferrying around two dozen passengers, veered off a ferry into the Nile River, claiming the lives of at least nine Egyptian women and children, according to health authorities.

The incident occurred in Monshat el-Kanater town in Giza province, one of the integral parts of Greater Cairo. The Health Ministry reported that nine other passengers sustained injuries, with six receiving treatment at the scene and three being transported to hospitals. Details regarding the extent of their injuries remain undisclosed.

Among the victims, a heartbreaking four were minors, as indicated by a list obtained by The Associated Press.

Giza provincial Governor Ahmed Rashed confirmed that the submerged bus had been recovered from the river, with ongoing rescue operations underway as of midday Tuesday. However, the exact cause of the accident remains undetermined.

Reports from the state-owned Akhbar daily suggest that the majority of passengers on the bus were women heading to work at the time of the tragic incident. Security forces have reportedly detained the driver of the vehicle for further inquiry.

This accident adds to a grim tally of transportation mishaps in Egypt, attributed largely to inadequate maintenance and lax enforcement of safety regulations. Just in February, a ferry carrying day laborers capsized in the Nile in Giza, resulting in the loss of at least 10 lives among the 15 individuals aboard.
