A devastating bus accident near Kempton Park has claimed the lives of 12 people, leaving 45 others injured, emergency services have confirmed.

The crash occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning when the bus, traveling on the R21 highway,northbound in Ekurhuleni, near the OR Tambo International Airport.  reportedly lost control and overturned. Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the accident, but initial reports suggest that poor visibility and road conditions may have played a role.

Emergency responders, including paramedics and firefighters, rushed to the scene to assist the injured and transport them to nearby hospitals. Some victims sustained critical injuries, while others suffered moderate to minor wounds.

Local authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution as investigations continue. Traffic delays were reported in the area, with officials working to clear the wreckage.

This tragic accident has once again raised concerns about road safety and the dangers of long-distance travel. The authorities have vowed to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause and prevent future tragedies.

The highway remained closed on Tuesday afternoon as officials tried to retrieve the bodies of two people who, at 1pm, were still trapped in the wreckage.

According to the City, which confirmed the death toll, the accident occurred at about 6.45am.
