South African footballer Shaun Mogaila faces charges of culpable homicide and reckless driving after allegedly fleeing a fatal car crash that killed a young girl, police report.
The 29-year-old Sekhukhune United player is accused of colliding his BMW with a car carrying a woman and two children in Gauteng province on Wednesday morning. The nine-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a police spokesperson.
Mogaila reportedly turned himself in to Rabie Ridge Police Station hours later. He was due to appear in a magistrate’s court, though the hearing faced delays, as confirmed by a National Prosecution Authority (NPA) spokesperson.
The adult passenger and a 13-year-old remain hospitalized. Sekhukhune United has not yet released a statement on the incident.
A dashcam video of the crash has circulated widely on social media, drawing significant public reaction. One user expressed fear about driving, saying, “I can drive safely with my family and still end up in danger.” Others defended Mogaila, commending him for turning himself in after the incident.
Mogaila had played in a match against Richards Bay at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Limpopo just hours before the accident.
