"South Africa Constructs Concrete Wall to Deter Mozambican Migrants"

Concrete barriers are being erected along a portion of the South Africa-Mozambique border to deter individuals from crossing to steal and smuggle vehicles.

South African authorities have allocated nearly $2.7 million (£2.1 million) for the construction of the wall, which consists of three sections:

An 8km (5-mile) barrier near Tembe Elephant Park
An 8km-long stretch near iSimangaliso Wetland Park
A 9km wall from the western boundary of Tembe Elephant Park towards Pongolo River

Construction on the Tembe Elephant Park section is currently in progress, as stated in a joint briefing by the South African government and KwaZulu-Natal province.

“The community and the South African National Defense Force have responded positively to the project’s impact,” the briefing noted.

The effectiveness of the barrier in deterring crime was highlighted by a recent incident in which thieves attempted to drive a stolen SUV over the barrier using iron ladders. However, the ladders buckled, leading the perpetrators to set the vehicle on fire to destroy evidence.

According to Defenceweb, 15 companies of troops are stationed to protect South Africa’s borders, particularly the “high-risk borders” with Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Lesotho.
