Rwanda has reported six fatalities from a recent outbreak of the Marburg virus, with health officials confirming that most victims were healthcare workers in an intensive care unit. Health Minister Sabin Nsanzimana announced that 20 cases have been identified since the outbreak was declared on Friday.

Marburg virus, closely related to Ebola, has a high fatality rate of up to 88%. It is transmitted to humans from fruit bats and spreads through contact with bodily fluids of infected individuals. Symptoms can be severe and include fever, muscle pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and in some cases, death due to extreme blood loss.

Currently, there are no specific treatments or vaccines available for Marburg. However, various blood products and immune therapies are in development, according to the World Health Organization.

In response to the outbreak, Rwandan authorities are ramping up contact tracing, surveillance, and testing efforts. Minister Nsanzimana indicated that officials are tracking around 300 individuals who may have come into contact with confirmed cases. He urged the public to avoid physical contact and adhere to hygiene protocols, such as regular handwashing with soap or sanitizer, to help contain the virus.

Most reported cases are centered in the capital, Kigali. In light of the outbreak, the U.S. embassy has advised its personnel to work remotely for the next week.

This outbreak marks the first confirmed cases of Marburg in Rwanda. Neighboring Tanzania faced an outbreak in 2023, while Uganda experienced a fatal incident in 2017.

As health officials work to contain this virus, staying informed and vigilant is crucial.
