The United Nations has appointed Major General Anita Asmah of Ghana as the Head of Mission and Force Commander for the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), marking a historic first for an African woman in this role.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced the groundbreaking appointment on December 11, 2024, underscoring the UN’s dedication to advancing gender equality in peacekeeping.

Major General Asmah’s leadership will oversee UNDOF’s critical mission of maintaining peace in the Golan Heights. Her appointment is a significant milestone, reflecting the growing recognition of women’s capabilities in high-stakes global leadership positions.

A proud alumna of Aburi Girls’ Senior High School and a graduate of the University of Ghana with degrees in Arts and Law, Major General Asmah’s career is a testament to determination and excellence. Fluent in both English and French, she has distinguished herself on national and international stages.

This achievement also shines a spotlight on Ghana’s increasing prominence in global peacekeeping. Commodore Faustina Anokye, a former UN peacekeeping deputy commander, praised the appointment as an inspiration for Africa, calling on other nations to promote senior women to leadership positions in peacekeeping.

Major General Asmah’s historic appointment not only sets a precedent for greater inclusivity in peacekeeping but also inspires a new generation of women to pursue leadership roles, heralding a brighter and more equitable future for global governance.
