In southwest Congo, heavy rains triggered a devastating landslide that claimed the lives of at least 15 people, with as many as 60 others reported missing, according to local officials on Sunday.

The tragic incident occurred on Saturday near the port town of Idiofa, where the collapse of a hillside caused by the relentless rainfall led to the landslide. Dhedhe Mupasa, a local deputy elected official, explained to reporters on Sunday the circumstances surrounding the disaster.

Following the landslide, an immediate response was initiated, with an dispatched team deployed by interim provincial Governor Félicien Kiway to search for survivors. Fortunately, seven individuals were found alive and were promptly hospitalized. However, the fate of the remaining 60 individuals still missing remains uncertain.

The task of determining the exact number of missing persons has proven challenging, as the affected area typically serves as a bustling marketplace every Saturday. Described as a port where fishermen gather to sell their catch and purchase supplies, the region has now been transformed into a site of tragedy and loss.
