French authorities have introduced overnight curfews in parts of Paris and several other cities in an effort to prevent further violence following a weekend of widespread rioting that targeted public buildings, town halls and businesses across the country.

Paris police announced restrictions covering Place de la République, where clashes erupted on Saturday, and the Les Halles shopping district, which was affected by looting. The curfew runs from 11 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday, while gatherings and demonstrations are prohibited from 8 p.m.

In northern France, authorities imposed a curfew for children and teenagers under 18 in several cities, including Lille, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. over the following two nights. Nice, on the French Riviera, also introduced an overnight curfew for minors, beginning at 9 p.m.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu defended the police response, describing the absence of fatalities amid severe violence and extensive property damage as “a miracle.” He had earlier called for curfews to be limited to specific areas most affected by the unrest.

The measures come as authorities seek to restore order while avoiding unnecessarily broad restrictions. The violence has revived memories of previous unrest in France, including the 2023 riots following the fatal police shooting of a teenager and the Yellow Vest protests that began in 2018 over fuel prices and wider economic grievances.
