Prince Harry and Meghan embarked on a three-day visit to Nigeria, commencing with a series of engagements aimed at promoting mental health awareness and supporting charitable initiatives. The royal couple’s visit coincided with events linked to the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, an inspiring sporting event for injured servicemen and women founded by Prince Harry.

Their visit commenced with a tour of Lightway Academy in Abuja, where they were warmly welcomed by traditional dancers and enthusiastic schoolchildren. The couple interacted with students, expressing joy at joining in classroom activities and sharing anecdotes about their own children, Archie and Lilibet.

Launching a Mental Health Summit

Prince Harry and Meghan delivered remarks to launch a two-day mental health summit, engaging with students to destigmatize conversations around mental health. Prince Harry encouraged the audience to openly discuss their struggles, emphasizing the importance of seeking support. Meghan echoed his sentiments, sharing personal anecdotes and affirming her belief in the students’ potential.

Their message resonated with attendees, including Valeria Offia, a student who bravely shared her own mental health journey. The couple’s visit underscored the significance of destigmatizing mental health issues and fostering open dialogue, particularly in regions like Nigeria where such discussions are less common.

Supporting Charitable Initiatives

In addition to their advocacy for mental health awareness, Prince Harry and Meghan participated in various charitable activities during their visit. They visited a military rehabilitation center in Kaduna to meet injured service personnel and attended events organized by Nigeria: Unconquered, a charity aligned with the Invictus Games.

Meghan also co-hosted an event focused on Women in Leadership with Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, director-general of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Their engagements underscored the couple’s commitment to philanthropy and supporting causes that uplift vulnerable communities.

Reflecting on the Invictus Games

Prince Harry’s visit to Nigeria followed his attendance at the 10th-anniversary celebration of the Invictus Games in London. Despite his packed schedule, he made time to interact with the public and surprise attendees at a party hosted by the charity Scotty’s Little Soldiers.

While in London, Prince Harry’s uncle Earl Spencer also attended a service at St. Paul’s Cathedral, marking the anniversary. Although the king’s ongoing treatment prevented a meeting between them, Prince Harry’s presence at the event highlighted his dedication to supporting veterans and their families.

As Prince Harry and Meghan continue their visit to Nigeria, their efforts to promote mental health awareness and contribute to charitable initiatives serve as a testament to their commitment to making a positive impact on communities worldwide.
