The romantic entanglements of South Africa’s Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini have captivated the nation, stirring both fascination and outrage—especially among his traditionally conservative subjects. The monarch, who is expected to uphold centuries-old customs, has broken from tradition by seeking a legal divorce from his first wife, Queen Ntokozo kaMayisela.
Breaking with Tradition
Polygamy is deeply rooted in Zulu culture, but divorce is virtually unheard of, especially among royalty. “In Zulu culture, there is no divorce. You are not supposed to chase away your wife,” cultural expert Prof. Gugu Mazibuko of the University of Johannesburg said.
Historically, even when royal marriages soured, queens remained in the king’s homestead, continuing to be cared for without formally ending the union. However, King Misuzulu’s decision to file divorce papers in December has publicly shattered this norm.
Royal Marital Troubles
The 50-year-old monarch, who took the throne in 2021 after the sudden deaths of his parents, has been at the center of multiple marriage-related controversies:
-
His first wife, Queen kaMayisela, came from a modest background and was reportedly hastily married before his coronation. She challenged the king’s attempt to wed another woman, arguing it would constitute bigamy. However, a court ruled against her, stating she had previously consented to him taking multiple wives.
-
His second wife, Queen Nozizwe kaMulela, a high-profile banker from Eswatini, appears to be estranged from the king, fueling speculation that their marriage was never fully finalized in traditional ceremonies.
-
His planned third marriage to Nomzamo Myeni was postponed despite court approval, raising doubts about whether it will ever take place.
-
A rumored fourth wife, Sihle Mdluli, is reportedly being considered as “mother of the nation,” a title that would elevate her status among the king’s consorts.
