UN Peacekeeping Chief Calls for Immediate Ceasefire in DRC as Violence Escalates

The head of United Nations peacekeeping, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, has called for an immediate halt to hostilities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), as renewed clashes between the March 23 Movement (M23) and the Congolese government lead to widespread civilian casualties and mass displacement.

Speaking in an interview with China Central Television (CCTV) in New York, Lacroix expressed deep concern over the escalating violence, warning that the conflict threatens to destabilize not only the DRC but the broader Great Lakes region.

M23 Advances and Rising Instability

In recent months, M23 rebels have launched major offensives, seizing territory in the eastern provinces of North Kivu and South Kivu. The situation has been further complicated by the Congo River Alliance, a political-military coalition aligned with M23, which has established a parallel administration in these areas.

While M23’s territorial expansion has slowed, Lacroix cautioned that the risk of further escalation remains high, with the potential to ignite a wider regional conflict. He underscored the severe humanitarian crisis, urging immediate action to prevent further suffering.

Diplomatic Efforts and UN’s Role

Despite the deteriorating security situation, Lacroix highlighted ongoing diplomatic efforts led by regional bodies like the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East African Community (EAC). He welcomed their involvement in peace talks, calling it a hopeful sign for a negotiated settlement.

The UN Security Council recently adopted Resolution 2773, demanding an immediate ceasefire and the withdrawal of foreign forces from the DRC. The resolution urges both Kinshasa and Kigali to honor commitments under the Luanda Process and resolve disputes through diplomacy.

Lacroix stressed that achieving a ceasefire is the crucial first step, emphasizing that MONUSCO (the UN stabilization mission in the DRC) stands ready to monitor its implementation.

Urgent Need for Action

With the situation deteriorating, Lacroix warned that any delay in diplomatic efforts could lead to a significant escalation in violence. He reaffirmed MONUSCO’s commitment to protecting civilians, stating that the mission continues to safeguard hundreds of thousands of people despite mounting challenges.

As pressure builds, the international community faces a critical moment to prevent the conflict from spiraling further—before it becomes even harder to contain.
