President Donald Trump suggested on Monday that some people have encouraged him to seek a third term, despite the U.S. Constitution’s clear two-term limit. Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump said he had not explored the idea but acknowledged that “they do say there’s a way you can do it.”
While the 22nd Amendment explicitly prohibits a third term, his comments have fueled speculation about his long-term political ambitions. When asked about a hypothetical rematch against former President Barack Obama, Trump responded enthusiastically: “Oh, I love that. That would be a good one.”
During the briefing, Trump also touted upcoming trade policies, including his push for “reciprocal tariffs,” which he claimed would boost the U.S. economy. “I think it’s something that is going to bring a lot of wealth back to our country—tremendous wealth,” he said. However, economists warn that such tariffs could escalate trade tensions and damage relations with key allies.
The president also addressed Elon Musk’s advisory role in his administration. Musk, currently serving as a “special government employee,” has been advising on efficiency measures but is expected to return to his business ventures soon. “I think he’s amazing, but he’s got a big company to run,” Trump said, adding that some of Musk’s team members may continue working with the government.
