Tragedy struck the heart of Tanzania’s industrial sector as an explosion ripped through a sugar factory in the eastern district of Mvomero, claiming the lives of eleven workers and leaving two others injured. According to authorities, the catastrophic blast occurred following the rupture of a heavy-duty steam pipe as production was underway on Wednesday night.
Among the victims were not only Tanzanians but also individuals from Brazil, India, China, and Kenya, underscoring the international impact of this devastating incident, as confirmed by officials. As investigations into the cause of the explosion commence, Alex Mkama, the regional police commander, assured the public that his team is diligently working to unravel the circumstances behind this tragic event.
The explosion, which took place around 01:00 local time on Thursday, struck a factory operated by Mtibwa Sugar Estates Limited, a prominent player in Tanzania’s sugar industry. Mr. Mkama revealed that all the deceased were electrical and machine staff stationed in the control room at the time of the explosion.
In response to the calamity, Mtibwa Sugar Company has taken the proactive measure of suspending all production activities within the affected factory, one of the largest in the nation. Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased workers have been respectfully moved to the mortuary of the factory’s hospital as the community mourns this profound loss.
