Tragic news has shaken the football community in South Africa as Luke Fleurs, a promising talent of Kaizer Chiefs, was fatally shot during a car hijacking incident, according to police reports.

The horrifying incident unfolded on Wednesday night at a petrol station in the Johannesburg suburb of Florida. Fleurs, aged 24, was awaiting service when he was confronted by unidentified assailants, demanding him to exit his vehicle. In a devastating turn of events, he was shot in the upper body before one of the suspects fled the scene with his car.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo recounted the harrowing ordeal, stating, “The suspects pointed at him with a firearm and took him out of his vehicle, then shot him once on the upper body.”

Kaizer Chiefs, a renowned club in South Africa, expressed profound sadness over the loss, labeling it as “tragic.” They assured that authorities are handling the matter and promised to provide further updates in due course.

Reflecting on Fleurs’ talent and potential, Sports Minister Zizi Kodwa lamented the loss, emphasizing the toll of violent crime on communities. Fleurs, a skilled defender, had joined Kaizer Chiefs in the previous year after a stint with SuperSport United. His participation in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 showcased his prowess, although he had yet to debut for the senior national team.

Described as a “classy defender” with “great technical abilities” by Kaizer Chiefs, Fleurs’ football journey began in 2013 at the Ubuntu Cape Town Academy, according to local sources.

In honor of Fleurs’ memory, the Premier Soccer League announced a moment of silence to be observed across top-flight and second-tier games during the upcoming weekend.

The tragic loss reverberated throughout the football fraternity, with South African Football Association president Danny Jordaan expressing deep sorrow. “This is such a huge loss for his family, friends, his teammates and football in general,” he remarked.

As tributes pour in on social media, with fans mourning the untimely demise of a bright talent, the incident also underscores South Africa’s struggle with escalating gun violence. With several mass shootings reported in recent years, the country grapples with one of the world’s highest murder rates, as per police data.
