At least 46 people have died, and 10 others were injured after a Sudanese military plane crashed into a residential neighborhood in Omdurman, the twin city of the capital, Khartoum, state media reports.

The Antonov aircraft went down shortly after taking off from the military’s Wadi Seidna air base on Tuesday evening, killing both military personnel and civilians.

The cause of the crash remains unclear, though military sources suggest a technical malfunction may have been responsible.

Crash Follows Escalation in Sudan’s Civil War

The incident occurred just a day after the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which is locked in a brutal war with the Sudanese army, claimed to have downed a fighter jet in South Darfur.

Sudan has been ravaged by conflict since April 2023, when a power struggle between the army and RSF erupted into full-scale war, devastating major cities like Khartoum and Omdurman. The fighting has killed thousands and displaced around 12 million people.

Emergency Response and Casualties

Sudan’s health ministry said emergency teams transported injured civilians, including children, to a nearby hospital following the crash, citing military sources, reported that a senior army commander in Khartoum was among the dead.

Eyewitnesses described hearing a loud explosion, with several homes damaged in the crash, according to AFP. The impact also caused power outages in surrounding neighborhoods.

A War-Torn Nation

The war has effectively divided Sudan, with the army controlling the north and east, while the RSF dominates most of Darfur in the west and parts of the south.

In recent weeks, the army has regained control of parts of Khartoum and its surrounding areas from the RSF, intensifying the conflict.

As Sudan remains engulfed in war, the latest tragedy underscores the deepening instability gripping the nation.
