The bodies of South African journalist Sibusiso Aserie Ndlovu and his partner, Zodwa Precious Mdhluli, have been discovered in an advanced state of decomposition, more than two months after the couple went missing.
While police confirmed the recovery of human remains in Limpopo province, they say DNA testing is still underway to officially confirm the identities. However, two media organisations—the African Media and Communicators Forum (AMCF) and the National Press Club (NPC)—stated that forensic teams have already identified the remains as those of Ndlovu and Mdhluli.
The couple had not been seen since 18 February. A breakthrough came after the arrest of five suspects found in possession of the couple’s stolen belongings, including furniture, appliances, and car parts.
The AMCF and NPC said the victims had been murdered and their bodies dumped in the bush. The news has shocked the local media community.
“I am terribly sad. We held out hope that despite the time that had passed, they would still be found alive,” said AMCF chairperson Elijah Mhlanga. “Our deepest condolences go out to the families of our brother and sister.”
Ndlovu was the founder of Capital Live, a community radio station based in Pretoria.
The case underscores the broader crisis of violent crime in South Africa, which continues to grapple with one of the highest murder rates in the world. Official statistics show that 26,232 murders were recorded in 2024—an average of 72 per day.
