Newly appointed Archbishop of Johannesburg, Cardinal Stephen Brislin, led a heartfelt prayer service on Sunday, uniting South African Catholics in support of Pope Francis’ recovery as he battles double pneumonia.

The two-hour gathering at the Cathedral of Christ the King in central Johannesburg drew a diverse crowd of well-wishers. Brislin acknowledged the deep concern for the Pope’s health, emphasizing the strong connection between South Africa and the pontiff.

While Pope Francis has yet to visit South Africa, the archbishop highlighted his warm reception of South African delegations at the Vatican and his swift condolences following the deadly 2023 fire in Johannesburg that claimed over 70 lives.

Brislin expressed hope for the Pope’s recovery, urging the faithful to uphold his messages of compassion and advocacy for the vulnerable.

“The global response to his illness reflects not only his impact on the Catholic Church but also his moral authority as a leader known for integrity and truth,” he said.

Pope Francis, who had part of a lung removed in his youth, was hospitalized on February 14 at Rome’s Gemelli University Hospital with severe respiratory issues, which developed into double pneumonia—a dangerous infection affecting both lungs.

As he continues to receive medical care, Catholics worldwide remain in prayer for his health.
