Sierra Leone has urgently recalled its ambassador to Guinea, Alimamy Bangura, following the discovery of seven suitcases containing suspected cocaine in a vehicle belonging to its embassy.

Guinean authorities intercepted the embassy vehicle on Monday, detaining its occupants on suspicion of transporting “substances suspected to be cocaine,” according to Sierra Leone’s Foreign Minister, Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba.

“In light of this serious development, the government has recalled Ambassador Bangura to Freetown to provide a comprehensive account of the incident,” Kabba stated. He clarified that the ambassador was not present in the vehicle and is not under arrest.

“There is no evidence to suggest that the ambassador is involved in this trafficking,” Kabba added.

Authorities also found approximately $2,000 (£1,600) in cash with the suitcases, though the weight of the suspected drugs has not been disclosed.

Ongoing Investigation

Kabba emphasized that Sierra Leone and Guinea are collaborating on a thorough investigation, pledging accountability for anyone involved. “Anyone found guilty of breaking Sierra Leonean and international drug trafficking laws will face the full force of the law,” he said.

Regional Drug Trafficking Concerns

West Africa remains a major transit hub for cocaine smuggling from Latin America to Europe, with some drugs also consumed locally. Last April, Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio declared drug abuse a national emergency, citing the prevalence of substances like Kush—a highly addictive psychoactive blend ravaging communities.

Local leaders have repeatedly urged the government to address drug abuse and provide support for affected individuals, underscoring the broader societal impact of the drug trade in the region.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges in combating drug trafficking in West Africa and the need for strengthened measures to prevent such occurrences.
