The Prince of Wales has shared his deep personal connection to Africa as he prepares for the Earthshot Prize awards ceremony in Cape Town, South Africa, next week.
“Africa has always held a special place in my heart, as a source of comfort in my youth and the place where I proposed to my wife,” said Prince William, reflecting on his upcoming visit. Africa also held significance for his mother, Princess Diana, known for her humanitarian work across the continent, including her advocacy for landmine clearance.
Prince William proposed to Catherine in Kenya in 2010, having carried his late mother’s engagement ring in his rucksack for several weeks in anticipation of the moment.
Returning the Earthshot Prize to its “African roots,” Prince William noted the project was inspired by a trip to Namibia in 2018, where he saw the potential of innovative environmental solutions to create transformative change for people and nature alike.
The Earthshot Prize, launched in 2021, awards £1 million to each of five winners focused on groundbreaking environmental solutions. With over 400 African-led projects nominated this year, the prince emphasized a strong commitment to Africa. Although the continent contributes minimally to global emissions, it remains among the most vulnerable to climate change.
“My hope is that Earthshot will showcase innovators transforming their communities, attract investors to scale African solutions, and inspire young Africans passionate about climate,” he said.
In an eco-friendly twist, guests will walk a green carpet, and landmarks across South Africa will be illuminated in green. The awards ceremony, held on November 6, will include a Lion King performance on Table Mountain.
