Conservative MP Deported from Djibouti Alleges China’s Influence

Tim Loughton, Member of Parliament for East Worthing and Shoreham, claims he was deported from Djibouti due to the country’s close ties with China.

During a recent trip, Loughton was detained for over seven hours and denied entry into Djibouti. He described the experience as “lonely and frightening.”

Loughton, who faced sanctions from China in 2021, alleges that his presence as a sanctioned MP was unwelcome in Djibouti, which he asserts is heavily influenced by China.

According to Loughton, Djibouti’s alignment with China led to his deportation, as the country complies with China’s wishes.

His visit to Djibouti included a meeting with the British ambassador. Upon arrival, Loughton’s passport was scanned, and he was questioned about his occupation. He believes that his status as an MP triggered his deportation.

Loughton expressed concern over China’s expansive influence, particularly in Africa, and highlighted the intimidation faced by those who criticize China’s human rights abuses.

In 2021, China imposed sanctions on Loughton and four other MPs for their criticism of China’s treatment of the Uighur Muslim minority group. Loughton, a co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Tibet, has been vocal about China’s human rights record.

Despite his deportation from Djibouti, Loughton remains committed to advocating for human rights and reforming how democratic countries engage with China.

Loughton, a former minister and member of the home affairs select committee, has announced that he will not seek re-election after more than 27 years in parliament.
