A lightning strike at a Ugandan refugee camp killed 13 children and one adult, police report. The victims were attending a church service on Saturday evening at Palabek Refugee Settlement in northwest Uganda when lightning struck, injuring an additional 34 people.
Kituuma Rusoke, Uganda Police spokesperson, shared that the adult victim was 21 years old, but did not provide details on the children’s ages. Heavy rains and thunderstorms have affected the area recently.
Palabek Refugee Settlement hosts over 80,000 refugees, many from South Sudan, according to the UN’s refugee agency. In 2019, a similar tragedy occurred when lightning killed 10 children during a football game in nearby Arua.
