The Kremlin has accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of deliberately avoiding peace efforts, citing his recent tense exchange with former U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated on Monday that despite potential cooperation between Moscow and Washington, achieving peace would remain elusive unless Zelenskyy was pressured into negotiations.
“He doesn’t want peace. Someone should make him want peace. If the Europeans do it, all kudos to them,” Peskov told reporters, suggesting that European nations must play a key role in repairing Ukraine’s strained ties with the U.S. following the Oval Office confrontation.
He further criticized the Ukraine summit held in the UK on Sunday, dismissing it as an event designed to prolong the fighting rather than foster peace.
Meanwhile, Russia continues its so-called “special military operation” in Ukraine, with Peskov reaffirming that Moscow remains committed to achieving its initial objectives.
Now in its third year, the war in Ukraine began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. However, tensions in the region date back to 2014, following Ukraine’s westward shift and Russia’s annexation of Crimea.
