A Kenyan police officer guarding one of the gates at President William Ruto’s official residence in Nairobi has died after being shot with an arrow, police have confirmed.
According to authorities, the incident occurred on Monday morning when a 56-year-old man armed with a bow and arrows approached officers stationed at the State House gate. When ordered to surrender, he reportedly advanced and shot Police Constable Ramadhan Matanka in the ribs.
Matanka was rushed to hospital but died while receiving treatment.
The attacker, who is said to have disguised himself as a homeless man carrying a sack concealing the weapons, was swiftly subdued and arrested. Video footage aired by the media later showed a handcuffed suspect with visible injuries being taken to hospital under police guard.
The assault has raised questions about security at one of Kenya’s most heavily protected sites. Police said the motive for the attack remains unclear, and an investigation is under way.
“The National Police Service condemns this heinous act and commends the officers for their swift response, which prevented further harm,” police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said, adding condolences to the slain officer’s family.
Matanka’s body has been taken to a Nairobi mortuary for a post-mortem. The suspect is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
