At least 42 people — including seven children — have died after a bus carrying Zimbabwean and Malawian nationals overturned on a mountain pass in South Africa’s Limpopo province, authorities said.
The crash occurred on Sunday night along a steep section of the N1 highway. “The bus veered off the road and plunged down an embankment,” local transport officials reported.
The vehicle had been travelling from Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape. It remains unclear how many passengers were on board.
Among the dead are 18 women, 17 men, and seven children. Forty-nine others were injured and taken to nearby hospitals.
President Cyril Ramaphosa mourned the victims, calling it “a tragedy not only for our country, but also for our sister states of Zimbabwe and Malawi.”
Transport Minister Barbara Creecy and other officials are expected to visit the crash site and meet survivors as investigations into the cause continue.
