DR Congo Faces Worsening Food Crisis as Conflict Drives Millions Into Hunger

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is experiencing an unprecedented food security crisis, with 28 million people now facing acute hunger—an increase of 2.5 million in just three months.

According to the latest assessment by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a combination of escalating conflict and soaring food prices has pushed the country deeper into crisis.

The situation has deteriorated rapidly, particularly following the outbreak of violence in December. The eastern provinces have been hit hardest, where conflict has displaced millions and stripped families of their livestock and livelihoods.

A Humanitarian Emergency

Over two million internally displaced people are on the brink of starvation, with 738,000 in critical conditions.

Shelley Thakral, spokesperson for the World Food Programme (WFP) in DR Congo, warned that the humanitarian situation is worsening rapidly, especially for families struggling to meet their basic needs.

Farmers like Bahavu Linda, who lost her home and livestock, stress the need for peace to restore agricultural activities. Meanwhile, Safi, a mother of three, highlighted the suffering of widows and orphans left without shelter or support.

Funding Shortfall Threatens Relief Efforts

The WFP aims to assist 6.4 million people but faces a funding shortfall of $399 million to sustain operations through August 2025. Without urgent financial support, millions remain at risk of starvation.

As the crisis deepens, aid agencies are calling for immediate action to prevent further loss of life in one of the world’s most overlooked humanitarian disasters.
