A tragic incident unfolded in Nigeria’s northern Kano state as at least 11 worshippers lost their lives and dozens more sustained injuries in an appalling attack on a mosque. According to police reports, a man allegedly doused the mosque with petrol, locked its doors, and set it ablaze, trapping approximately 40 worshippers inside.
The devastating assault, triggered by a family dispute over inheritance, occurred during morning prayers in the Gezawa area of Kano state. As flames engulfed the mosque, worshippers were heard wailing, struggling to escape the locked doors. Prompt intervention from neighbors and emergency response teams, including bomb experts, ensued, though tragically, lives were lost before the inferno could be contained.
While initial speculation hinted at the possibility of a bomb, subsequent investigations ruled out such involvement. The suspect, a 38-year-old individual now in police custody, confessed to targeting specific family members present in the mosque.
The aftermath of the attack saw a rise in casualties, with victims succumbing to their injuries while receiving medical attention. The Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano continues to provide treatment to the injured, including children, as the community grapples with the profound loss.
Local authorities have condemned the heinous act, emphasizing that it was borne out of a domestic dispute rather than an act of terrorism. Nonetheless, the senseless loss of life and the desecration of a sacred space have sparked outrage and mourning throughout the village.
As investigations continue and the community mourns its fallen members, calls for justice echo across the nation. Islamic cleric Sheik Dauda Sulaiman emphasized the severity of the crime, stressing the need for both repentance and restitution to the families of the victims.
