Cape Town Protests Demand End to Israel-Gaza War as Conflict Approaches Second Year

On Saturday, large crowds gathered in Cape Town calling for an end to the Israel-Gaza war, which is approaching its second year. Waving Palestinian flags and holding signs accusing Israel of genocide, demonstrators marched to parliament in a protest organized by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign.

Many participants voiced their support for South Africa’s case at the International Court of Justice, which argues that Israel’s military actions in Gaza after the October 7th Hamas attack amount to “genocide.”

“I believe the state of Israel is genocidal. It’s a settler colonial state,” said Cape Town resident Lee Anne Naidoo. “As South Africans, we understand what it means to have our land stolen and experience racism and white supremacy. I’m here to ensure that apartheid doesn’t continue in any form, legal or otherwise.”

Others drew parallels between Gaza’s situation and historical struggles against oppression. James Conlon, an Irish tourist, said, “As an Irishman, I feel connected to those who’ve faced colonization and injustice. What’s happening now is completely unjust, and I want to lend my voice to stand with the oppressed and voiceless.”

Gaza’s health ministry reports that nearly 42,000 Palestinians have been killed in the enclave since the war began, following the October 7th Hamas attack.
