At least 25 people have been killed after a bus carrying mourners from a funeral overturned in western Kenya, local authorities say.

According to a police report the driver lost control along the Kisumu–Kakamega Highway on Friday afternoon, veering off the road and overturning into a ditch. The area is notorious for deadly road accidents.

Police said 10 women, 10 men, and one girl died at the scene, while 20 others were injured — five critically. Four more victims later died in hospital. All passengers are believed to have been from the same family.

The bus, normally used for a secondary school, had no students on board and was transporting mourners from Nyahera to Nyakach, about 62 km (38.5 miles) away. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Kenya’s Ministry of Health has called for an “urgent blood drive” to help survivors and extended condolences to the bereaved, urging motorists to exercise greater caution.

President William Ruto called for swift action against “any acts of negligence” and for authorities to enforce road safety measures nationwide. The National Transport and Safety Authority said it will assist in the investigation.

The tragedy comes amid a spate of fatal accidents in Kenya this week: six people died in a light aircraft crash in Nairobi, nine were killed when a bus collided with a train in Naivasha, and seven more died in a road accident near Nairobi.

Kenya recorded more than 4,500 road deaths in 2021 — a 20% increase from the previous year — with over 16,000 people injured.
