Burkina Faso’s military government has announced the successful prevention of a significant coup attempt aimed at overthrowing junta leader Captain Ibrahim Traoré. Security Minister Mahamadou Sana revealed on state television that the plot involved both current and former soldiers collaborating with terrorist leaders, with the objective of attacking the presidential palace and destabilizing the nation.
The government alleges that the masterminds of the coup were based in neighboring Ivory Coast, accusing them of orchestrating the plan to create chaos and place Burkina Faso under international supervision. This incident marks the latest in a series of reported attempts to unseat Captain Traoré, who assumed power in 2022 amidst escalating militant attacks.
Despite the junta’s efforts to enhance security, including seeking new partnerships with countries like Russia, the situation remains precarious, with frequent insurgent attacks and approximately 40% of the country under militant control.
The Burkinabe authorities have previously accused Ivory Coast of harboring individuals intent on destabilizing their government, further straining diplomatic relations between the two nations.
As Burkina Faso continues to grapple with internal security challenges and regional tensions, the junta’s ability to maintain stability and address the root causes of unrest remains under scrutiny.
