Veteran South African gospel artist Solomon Molokoane, widely known as Solly Moholo, has passed away at 65, his management has confirmed.

The award-winning gospel icon had been hospitalized for several weeks after falling ill during a music tour in Botswana last month. Moholo rose to prominence in the early 2000s, becoming a household name in South African traditional gospel music.

In a statement, his management said, “He will be fondly remembered for the healing music he gifted us over the years.”

Last month, Moholo’s team revealed that he had suffered a stroke and was facing multiple organ failure. His family had made a public appeal for financial assistance to cover his medical expenses.

“It is with deep sorrow that we inform you, on behalf of the Molokoane family, of the passing of our beloved legend, Solly Moholo,” his management said. “He passed away on 2 October 2024 while in hospital.”

Moholo is remembered for hits such as *Die Poppe Sal Dans*, *Ka Letsatsi La Bofelo*, *Tsoha Jonase*, and many more. Tributes have poured in on social media from fellow gospel artists, friends, and fans, celebrating his life and music.

“He left an indelible mark on the industry with his soulful gospel music and energetic live performances,” said.

The ruling ANC described Moholo as a true icon of South African music. “His powerful voice, passion for spreading the word of God, and dedication to uplifting the spirits of many through his music will never be forgotten,” said ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula.

“You will live forever in the hearts of South Africans, Ntate,” the South African government posted.

The family has requested privacy during this time as they prepare for his burial.
